About The Pillars — The Foundations of Australia's Future
PSUA's work is organised across ten national pillars. Each pillar focuses on a key area of Australian community life — researched, community-informed and built to hold government accountable. Together, they form the foundation of a stronger, fairer Australia.
Our Ten National Pillars
Population & Capacity
Australia's population is growing, but our infrastructure, services and planning have not kept pace. This pillar focuses on responsible population planning and ensuring that infrastructure and essential services — hospitals, schools, roads, water and housing — have the capacity to meet community needs now and into the future. PSUA believes Australians deserve communities that are planned, resourced and built to support the people who live in them.

Australia's workforce and manufacturing sector are the backbone of our economy and our communities. This pillar supports a strong, resilient and locally grounded workforce — including local jobs, skills development, apprenticeships and Australia's manufacturing future. PSUA believes Australians should have access to meaningful, secure employment and that our nation should retain the capacity to make things here at home.

Every Australian deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of where they live or their financial circumstances. This pillar focuses on accessible, high-quality healthcare and improving health outcomes for all Australians — including rural and regional communities, mental health services, aged care and preventative health. PSUA believes a healthy nation is a strong nation.

Safe, affordable and appropriate housing is a fundamental need, not a luxury. This pillar focuses on housing availability, affordability and quality — alongside the infrastructure needed for strong, connected and liveable communities. PSUA believes every Australian family deserves a secure place to call home and communities built to support them.

Australia's national infrastructure — transport, energy, water and communications — underpins every aspect of community and economic life. This pillar covers the planning, investment and maintenance of critical national infrastructure to support a strong, connected and resilient Australia. PSUA believes infrastructure decisions must serve communities, not just commercial interests.

Australia's strategic assets — including ports, energy networks, water systems, land and critical resources — belong to the Australian people and must be protected accordingly. This pillar focuses on protecting and responsibly managing Australia's strategic assets for the benefit of current and future generations. PSUA believes these assets must not be sold, leased or compromised in ways that undermine national sovereignty or community wellbeing.

Australians deserve governments, institutions and industries that are transparent, accountable and operating in the public interest. This pillar focuses on transparency, accountability and appropriate oversight across key sectors affecting Australians — including government, corporate, media and public institutions. PSUA believes accountability is not optional; it is the foundation of a functioning democracy.

Australia is a dynamic nation and new challenges will always emerge. The Open Pillar is a flexible space for emerging issues, future priorities and community ideas that may not currently fit within another existing pillar. PSUA believes the community should help shape the agenda — and this pillar ensures there is always room for what matters most to Australians right now.

One Foundation. Ten Areas of Responsibility.
Each of PSUA's ten pillars operates as a distinct area of focus, with its own research priorities, community consultation process and policy development pathway. While each pillar addresses different issues, they all share the same foundation: evidence-based research, genuine community engagement and a commitment to holding decision-makers accountable.
Research & Evidence
Every pillar begins with research. PSUA gathers data, reviews existing policy, examines outcomes and identifies gaps between what Australians need and what is currently being delivered. This research forms the factual basis for everything that follows — community consultation, policy development and government submissions.
Community Voices & Consultation
Research alone is not enough. PSUA actively consults with community members, local organisations, industry representatives and subject-matter experts within each pillar area. Community voices shape the priorities, inform the policy positions and ensure that PSUA's work reflects the real experiences of Australians — not just statistics on a page.
From Research to Accountability
Once research and consultation are complete, PSUA develops clear policy positions and prepares formal submissions to government, regulatory bodies and relevant institutions. These submissions are evidence-based, community-informed and focused on practical, achievable outcomes for Australians.
Monitoring, Follow-Up & Outcomes
PSUA does not submit and walk away. Each pillar includes an ongoing monitoring and follow-up process — tracking government responses, measuring outcomes and reporting back to the community. Accountability requires follow-through, and PSUA is committed to staying engaged until real change is achieved.
Research remains the foundation. Public engagement builds upon it, never replaces it.
